Lucas
Lucas whistled to himself as he stepped from the shower and dried off. Being stuck in a barn overnight with Ella could have gone a thousand different ways. Lucky for him, Ella couldnât ignore his charms for long.
He glanced up in the mirror. Staring back at him was the face of a handsome man, one who could get any girl he wanted. At least thatâs who he used to be. Ella had proven to be a challengeâbut not one that wasnât completely worth fighting for.
His grin faded as a sliver of doubt crept in among all that oozing confidence. Ella was something special. Her strength was something that still surprised him. The way she could snap back with a comment proved her wit was intact.
What if he took her on this date and she realized sheâd made a mistake?
Lucas shook off the concern and turned away from the mirror. Sheâd spent the night in the barn with him. If that hadnât driven her away, then nothing could. Ella might be a lot of things, but even he could see she was a good judge of character. And if she could see the good in him, then who was he to argue?
Turning to face his reflection once more, Lucas reached for a comb and then hissed. The movement caused a sharp pain to shoot through his hand. The paramedic said the cut wasnât deep enough for stitches, but it needed to be cleaned and glued. Certain movements still caused a fiery pain to overwhelm him, and not for the first time did Lucas regret trying to escape from the barn.
Gingerly, he picked up the comb, then thought better of using that hand and moved it to the other. Tonight was going to be the first and maybe only shot he had with Ella. Everything had to be perfect.
Banging on the bathroom door drew his attention. He glanced at the wood but opted to ignore it. Whoever it was would have to wait.
âLucas! Youâve been in there for an hour. I have to use the bathroom.â Charlie banged on the door again. âI thought only girls were supposed to take long showers.â She groaned, and this time it almost sounded like she kicked the door before storming off.
Lucas chuckled. In a family of mostly boys, Charlie got the short end of the stick. She had to deal with not only protective brothers but realizing that hogging the bathroom wasnât strictly a girlâs thing.
âSheâs right, Lucas. You need to let some of us use the bathroom. Wadeâs locked us out of the other one and I have a meeting tonight.â Mason sounded close to the door, but he didnât show the kind of aggression their little sister exhibited. âI need to wash my hair. Can you finish getting ready in your room?â
It was harder to say no to Mason.
Lucas opened the door, resting his arm overhead on it. He smirked at his younger brother. âAnd what is this meeting about?â
âThereâs a book signing at the library.
